Robyn J. Hakanson, MD
Dr. Robyn Hakanson is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon born in North Dakota in 1969. She graduated cum laude from Davidson College in 1991 with a B.A. degree. While attending college she was a student athletic trainer and head student trainer 1989-1991. After receiving her B.A. degree she was accepted into medical school at Duke University School of Medicine. She received her M.D. in May of 1995. Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC accepted her for internship in July of 1995 which she completed in 1996 and continued with Carolinas Medical Center for her orthopedic residency from 1996 until 2000. During her orthopedic residency she also served as Assistant Team Physician for the Charlotte Sting women's NBA team and provided coverage for the Davidson College women's basketball team.
Dr. Hakanson's interest in sports medicine and joint surgery led her to enroll in Fellowship at the Insall Scott Kelly Institute in New York, NY for adult reconstruction and sports medicine. During this year long program she provided team coverage for the New York Knicks NBA and the New York Liberty WNBA games as well as medical care at New York Yankee stadium.
Upon completion of her Fellowship she began her orthopedic career at Mountain Vista Orthopaedics in Greeley, Colorado in October of 2001. She served on staff at North Colorado Medical Center where she participated on the Total Joint Task Force. Her efforts on this task force were to coordinate orthopedic and ancillary department efforts to standardize and improve clinical pathways for total joint surgery. Dr. Hakanson was clinical instructor at Denver Health Medical Center to orthopedic residents from October of 2001 until March 2004.
After living 13 years in North Carolina during her medical education, Dr. Hakanson decided to return and make her home in Mt. Airy. She is married to Erik and they have 3 beautiful children. Dr. Hakanson joined Tri-County Orthopedic & Sports Medicine in March 2004. She is board certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons on March 22, 2006. She serves on the staff of Northern Hospital of Surry County and Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. She specializes in joint replacement and sports medicine.
