C.S. (Skip) Whitman, MD
Doctor Skip Whitman is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon who founded Tri-County Orthopedic & Sports Medicine in June of 1992. Dr. Whitman graduated from Manasquan High School, Manasquan, New Jersey in 1970. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in June of 1974. Dr. Whitman has always been very active in sports. He was a high school All American football player, All State baseball player and All Conference Wrestler in high school. He was the co-captain of the Army football team in 1973. His interest in sports and long time affiliation with athletes has carried over into his current practice of medicine. After graduating from West Point, Dr. Whitman married his high school sweetheart, Diane Marie Raffetto. He entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant. He completed Airborne training and Ranger School after which he was assigned to the training brigade at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Dr. Whitman applied and was accepted into the Uniformed Services Health Professional Scholarship Program in 1977. He began his medical school training at Rutgers Medical School (now known as Robert Wood Johnson Medical School) in September of 1977. Dr. Whitman Graduated from Rutgers Medical School in May of 1981. He finished his medical school training as the number one student in his class for his senior year.
Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Whitman reentered the Army and was accepted for Internship training at Tripler Army Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. He was awarded the outstanding Intern award upon completion of his internship and began his orthopedic training in June of 1982 at Tripler.
During his orthopedic residency, Dr. Whitman co-authored a clinical study of the arthroscopic findings of acute anterior shoulder dislocations with Dr. John Uribe, now the team physician for the University of Miami Hurricanes, and Dr. C. Baker with the Houston Sports Medicine Clinic. Dr. Whitman has continued his special interest in shoulder arthroscopy in his practice in Elkin. Upon completion of residency training in July 1986, Dr. Whitman was assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina as the orthopedic surgeon for the 82nd Airborne Division. In 1988 Dr. Whitman was certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was reassigned to Womack Army Community Hospital as the Chief of Orthopedic Services. As chief, Dr. Whitman was responsible for training orthopedic residents from Duke, family medicine residents, orthopedic physician assistants, and orthopedic cast technicians. He managed the busiest orthopedic service at the MEDDAC level in the Army. Dr Whitman was awarded faculty positions in the department of surgery at Duke University and the Uniformed Services Universiy of Health Sciences.
While at Fort Bragg, Dr. Whitman served in several regional conflicts. He spent 7 months in the Middle East during Operations Desert Shield and Storm. With the 82nd Airborne Division, he accompanied the French Sixth Armored Division on the Western edge of the offensive campaign advancing over 100 kilometers into Iraq within the first 24 hours. While in the Middle East, Dr. Whitman performed the first arthroscopic procedure in a War theater in the history of the United States Army.
In 1992, Dr. Whitman made the difficult decision to leave the military and settle down with his family in North Carolina. In July of 1992, he left the Army after 16 years of active service and moved with his wife Diane, and their five children, to Elkin, North Carolina. In Elkin, Dr. Whitman established Tri-County Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, P.A. Since July of 1992, his practice had treated over 48,000 patients.
Dr. Whitman is president of Tri-County Orthopedic & Sports Medicine, PA and manages a very busy personal practice in general orthopedics with a heavy emphasis in sports medicine.
